Light of Hope

Address 대방동 616-10 (Address: 616-10 Daebang-dong)
Introduce In the old days in Sacheon, there were two dragons, both harboring resentment for not being able to ascend. One was 'Guryong,' lying on Guryong Mountain, and the other was 'Waryong,' lying on Waryong Mountain. One clear day, Guryong, residing on Guryong Mountain, exerted all its strength from head to tail and soared powerfully into the sky in an attempt to ascend. At that moment, something suddenly caught Guryong's tail, and when it turned its head to look down, it saw that its tail had struck a large rock. The force released from its body, and it fell down. Unable to ascend, Guryong, who had waited only for ascension, lay despondent for nine months. Initially, the villagers were pleased, thinking that Guryong's ascension would bring abundant rain. However, when the rain did not stop, they finally learned that the rain was actually Guryong's tears. Having heard this story, Waryong, living on Waryong Mountain, vowed, "I will definitely ascend!" and prepared meticulously for three days. On the first day, feeling a vague regret, Waryong roamed the entire town, capturing every corner as if trying to remember all the places it had lived. On the second day, filled with anticipation and excitement, it indulged in the local food, knowing it would be the last. On the last day, with a devout heart, Waryong bathed in the reservoir all night, shedding all the accumulated dirt from this land and grooming itself cleanly. Due to the need to hide all these processes from the eyes of the people, Waryong endured tremendous hardship but worked hard for ascension. Perhaps it was because it worked too hard for three days. On the day of ascension, as the warm sunlight poured down, Waryong couldn't overcome the drowsiness and dozed off for a moment... In the blink of an eye, people who mistook Waryong's sparkling and bent back for a mountain came rushing up, shouting, "The mountain is moving!" Startled by the wind shouting, Waryong could no longer move and quietly lay back down. Waiting for people to descend, it missed the opportunity to ascend and could not achieve ascension.

Having missed the chance to ascend harmoniously, Guryong and Waryong had only one way to achieve ascension. That was to possess the Yeouiju, a magical orb. With the Yeouiju in their possession, they could ascend immediately without waiting for the next unpredictable ascension day. However, the problem was that there was only one Yeouiju. How long the two dragons waited to obtain this Yeouiju! It is said that they believed they could do anything if only they could ascend. The question remained: where was the one and only Yeouiju? Guryong and Waryong searched for the Yeouiju with determination. However, for hundreds of years, the Yeouiju did not appear. During this time, the path Guryong had taken became a separated river, and the path Waryong had traversed became fragmented, forming several villages. Finally, Guryong and Waryong heard a story that the one and only Yeouiju had fallen deep into the sea of Silan. They met at the Silan seashore, where the sea is very deep.
The moment Guryong and Waryong, who had been struggling to seize the Yeouiju, each held it simultaneously, an indescribable red light is said to have erupted from the Yeouiju, lifting them into the sky. Finally, the two dragons ascended together. At that moment, the light emitted from the Yeouiju was so intense that it instantly dyed the sky and the sea in a red hue. Witnesses of this spectacle claimed, "The light was so bright that we couldn't see for a moment." Because of this, the breathtaking moment of the two dragons ascending was called 'Silan (失眼),' meaning 'blinding,' as it was deemed beautiful enough to blind the eyes. Those who witnessed the event couldn't forget the awe-inspiring sight of the entire sky and sea turning red. The word spread widely, and people began to gather at the Silan seashore every day at the same time, awaiting the 'Light of Yeouiju.' This tradition has continued to the present day, becoming the story of the 'Silan Sunrise resembling the Light of Yeouiju.' Additionally, it is said that those who made wishes while witnessing Guryong and Waryong's ascension had their wishes miraculously fulfilled. Even now, it is believed that wishes made towards the Silan sunset come true.
